Staurastrum manfeldtii var. splendidum (E. Messikommer) P.F.M. Coesel 1996

First described and illustrated by Messikommer (1928: 209, pl. 9: 14) as Staurastrum gracile var. splendidum. Much later Coesel (1996: 102, figs 5-6) transferred it as a variety of Staurastrum manfeldtii. It differs from the nominate variety in having compound supra-isthmial granules. It has a bulkier appearance and two apical protuberances, in face view, which support four granules each. At the tip of the processes are 4 medium sized granules.
Cell dimensions: L: 33-37 µm; B: 44-57 µm.; Is: 8.6-10.7 µm.
Infrequently found in mainly acidic conditions such as bogs and moorland pools.
