Cosmarium discrepans Stastny & Kouwets 2012

This size and shape of the cell is characteristic of a number of species and a close look at the granular structure and disposition are required. This species was first described in 2012 but because of the aforementioned possible confusion with similar species, it may not necessarily be rare. It mostly resembles Cosmarium punctulatum var. subpunctulatum both in shape and size. The authors have looked closely at earlier literature and consider some references may well represent this species. The main habitat is oligo-mesotrophic waters
