Phylum: Charophyta Family: Mesotaeniaceae
Netrium interruptum (L.A. de Brébisson ex J. Ralfs) J. Lütkemüller 1902
First described by Brébisson in Ralfs (1848: 151, pl. 25: 4 a-b) as Penium interruptum and illustrated by Jenner. It was later moved to Netrium by Lütkemüller (1902: 407). West & West (1904: 69) note: “This species is well characterized by the traverse division of the chloroplasts, so that four are present in each cell, arranged in a longitudinal series.” They also support terminal vacuoles with a single gypsum crystal.
Cell dimensions: L: 150-320 µm; B: 30-65 µm; L/B: 5-6.
Infrequently found in moorland pools, abandoned peat-cutting and similar acidic habitats.
