Closterium submoniliferum N.N. Woronichin 1924

First described by Woronichin (1924: 85) without illustration. Krieger (1935: 292, pl. 18: 10) made it a variety of Closterium moniliferum. Recently, Coesel, & Meesters (2023: 60) reinstated it as a full species. It differs from Cl. moniliferum in having smaller scattered pyenoids rather than large axile ones.
Cell dimensions: L: 350-425 µm; B: 58-79 µm; Ap: 18-28 µm; L/B: 5-6.
Infrequently found in circumneutral waters.
