Phylum: Charophyta Family: Mesotaeniaceae
Cylindrocystis brebissonii (J. Ralfs) A. de Bary 1858
First described by Ralfs (1848: 153) as Penium brebissonii. Later moved to Cylindrocystis by De Bary (1858: 35). The chloroplasts are generally regarded as asteroid but more recent research by Brook & Williamson (2010: 29) has shown “… especially in longer cells, the chloroplast lamellae become longitudinally extended and somewhat dissected. They are commonly quite narrow, lie at various angles to the cell's long axis, and may broaden at their distal ends against the inner cell wall.”
Cell dimensions: L: 30-80 µm; B: 13-22 µm; L/B: 2.0-4.0.
Widespread in acidic habitats, especially in Sphagnum bogs.
