Closterium aciculare T. West 1860

Tuffen West was a nineteenth-century British botanist and illustrator. He was the author of Half-Hours with the microscope, … 1858. Closterium aciculare needs to be compared with Cl. gracile var. elongatum but that taxon is parallel-sided for most of its length.
Cell dimensions: L: 350-650 µm; B: 5-8 µm; Ap: 1.5-2.0 µm; L/B: 45-120.
Found in the plankton of lochs and in moorland pools. A common species with a wide pH tolerance; it can often be found in great abundance.
