Cosmarium porteanum var. nephroideum Wittrock 1872

This species was named for George Porte (1819-1892) and the spelling corrected accordingly from C. portianum under which name most records can be found. Differs from the nominate variety by having reniform semicells. A species of loch-margins and peaty pools, which are slightly acidic. Not common in the Outer Hebrides.
