Desmidium grevillei (J. Ralfs) A. De Bary 1858
Kützing’s original description of 1843, as Didymoprium grevillei, was published in Ralfs (1848: 57, pl. 2). It was later moved to Desmidium, described and illustrated by De Bary (1858: 76, pl. 4: 30-31).
Cell dimensions: L: 20-28 µm; B: 41-56 µm.
An acidophile of moorland bogs and pools, also shallow lochans. West, West & Carter (1923: 249), as Desmidium cylindricum Greville, reported it as widespread but rarely abundant. This would still seem to be the case for the Outer Hebrides.
