Penium cylindrus J. Ralfs 1848

First described and illustrated by Ralfs (1848: 150, pl. 25: 2). Cells cylindrical with truncately-rounded apices, cell-wall with girdle bands, but not always discernible, and covered with small, random, granules.
Cell dimensions: L: 25-60 µm; B: 10-15 µm; L/B: 3-5.
Although widely distributed it is thought to be rare and only infrequently recorded. Found in bogs and peaty pools plus loch-margins with vegetation.
