Penium polymorphum (M. Perty) M. Perty 1852

First described by (Perty 1849: 28) as Closterium polymorphum. Three years later he moved it to Penium and illustrated it (Perty 1852: 207, pl. 16: 15). Cells cylindrical to having a hint of tumidity, with a slight median constriction. Many semicells gradually attenuating to the rounded apices. Cell-wall covered with small granules, usually in longitudinal rows but can be a little more random.
Cell dimensions: L: 45-60 µm; B: 20-30 µm; L/B: 2-3.
A rare species found in oligotrophic, acidic bogs, especially with Sphagnum.
