Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Desmidiacea

Euastrum neospeciosum P.F.M. Coesel & K.J. Meesters 2023

Originally described and illustrated by Boldt (1888: 9, pl. 1: 10-11) as Euastrum elegans var. speciosum. Shortly after, Schmidle (1898: 47, pl. 2: 25) moved the variety to Euastrum bidentatum. Coesel & Meesters (2023: 96, pl. 54: 6) decided it was distinct enough to warrant species status. It differs from the nominate variety in having more elaborate lateral lobes and deeper incurvations.
Cell dimensions: L: 40-60 µm; B: 25-40 µm; Is: 9-10.5 µm; Th: 22-23.5 µm; L/B: 1.45-1.65.
Found in acidic habitats such as Sphagnum bogs, moorland pools and old peat-cuttings. Frequently encountered in the Outer Hebrides.
